Interview with GM Fernando Peralta

Why are you playing this tournament?
I read about this tournament in the internet while I was searching for tournaments that I could play abroad. It's my second time here in Germany, many years ago I played a tournament in Duisburg. So far I passed a very good time in Nuremburg, but unfortunately I couldn't see much of the city.

What was your biggest success?
This year, I am qualified for the world cup in Siberia.

What do you like about chess?
I think chess is a very nice game and it's fun playing. It is also a very dynamic game, which you probably can't see being an outsider. Chess players like me come to travel all round the world and always meet new and interesting people.

How many tournaments are you playing a year?
I would call myself a semi-professional, I try to play ten to twelve tournaments a year. I don't have that much time, because I also give classes in chess for the club Serdanyola del Valles in Barcelona.

What is it like to play chess in your home country Argentina?
Forty years ago, Argentina had been a very powerful country in chess, but nowadays it isn't much like that. There are lots of good players but there are few strong clubs. Furthermore clubs are not as well organised as in other countries.

Are there any differences in playing chess in Argentina/Spain and in Germany?
I would say that in Spain tournaments are quite well organised and that their conditions are just as good as here. But in general, tournaments are bigger in Spain and Argentina although there are, referring to Argentina, just a few torunaments a year.

Could you give us three reasons why one shouldn't become a chess player?
That is a tough question. First of all, I think that people who want to get rich shouldn't play chess. Second, chess is nothing for the nervous type of people and third it's connected with responsibility, concerning play and preparations, which some people can't come up with.
